Salalah Airport MRO Facilities – Construction and Design Overview

The Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities at Salalah International Airport are a critical part of Oman’s aviation development plan, designed to support the growing needs of air traffic, logistics, and aircraft maintenance in the region.

🏗️ Construction and Design Overview

  • Facility Size:
Approximately 11,000 square meters (118,403 sq. ft.), comprising a main hangar and associated support buildings.
  • Design Features:
    • Hangar:
Built to accommodate wide-body aircraft and designed in compliance with international Code-F standards.
    • Support Facilities:
Include technical workshops, office spaces, and utility infrastructure.
    • Integration:
Seamlessly integrated with the adjacent cargo terminal covering about 33,000 square meters (355,209 sq. ft.).
  • Construction Timeline:
Part of the broader Salalah airport expansion, with major milestones completed between 2011 and 2015.

👷 Key Participants

  • Main Contractor:
Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P) – responsible for full design and build of the cargo and MRO facilities at both Muscat and Salalah airports.
  • BIM & MEP Services:
Provided by Pinnacle Infotech, which handled 3D modeling, coordination, and preparation of shop drawings for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • HVAC & Industrial Equipment Supplier:
Energy International – supplied critical systems such as Variable Air Volume (VAV) units, industrial fans, air curtains, and truck cooling equipment.

🛠️ Engineering & Design Highlights

  • BIM Implementation:
    • Developed detailed 3D models using a Level of Development (LOD) 400 specification for precise MEP and fire systems.
    • Used tools like Revit and Navisworks to coordinate across trades and resolve thousands of design clashes prior to construction.
  • Design Standards:
    • Complied with Development of Airport in Sultanate of Oman (DASO) standards for all modeling and shop drawing activities.
    • Managed transmittals, RFIs, and documentation workflows using Newforma project management software.

🌐 Strategic Significance

The Salalah MRO facilities are a key element in Oman’s long-term strategy to become a regional hub for aviation services. These facilities enhance the airport’s ability to handle increasing passenger and cargo traffic while offering comprehensive aircraft maintenance services. The development also supports Oman’s broader economic diversification goals by strengthening its logistics and tourism sectors.
