The Muscat Airport MC12 – MRO and Cargo Facilities project is a pivotal component of Oman’s strategy to enhance its aviation infrastructure and logistics capabilities. This initiative encompasses the development of state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities alongside advanced cargo terminals at Muscat International Airport.


🏗️ Project Overview

  • Total Area: Approximately 352,914 square meters, covering both Muscat and Salalah airports. (Pinnacle Infotech)
  • Cargo Terminal (Muscat):
    • Annual Capacity: Designed to handle up to 260,000 tons of cargo.
    • Facilities:
      • 19,000 m² of temperature-controlled storage.
      • 2,200 m² dedicated to live animal handling.
  • MRO Complex (Muscat):
    • Hangars:
      • Wide-body Code F hangars.
      • Two-position Code C hangar.
    • Additional Facilities:
      • Ground Run-up Enclosure (GRE).
      • Technical workshops and offices.
      • Central utility plant and ancillary buildings.
      • Advanced systems including aircraft wing and tail maintenance docks, overhead cranes, and Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) for parts storage.

  • BIM & MEP Services: Pinnacle Infotech provided comprehensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) services, including 3D modeling, coordination, and shop drawings for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection (MEPF) systems. (Pinnacle Infotech)
  • HVAC & Industrial Equipment: Energy International supplied various components such as Variable Air Volume (VAV) units, fans, air curtains, and truck cooling fans. (Energy International)

🛠️ Engineering & Design Highlights

  • BIM Implementation:
    • Developed 3D models with Level of Development (LOD) 400 for MEP and Fire Protection systems.
    • Utilized Revit and Navisworks for model creation and clash detection.
    • Addressed over 6,000 clashes, including 3,000 critical ones, ensuring seamless coordination among various trades. (Pinnacle Infotech)
  • Design Standards:
    • Adopted the Development of Airport in Sultanate of Oman (DASO) standards for MEP modeling and shop drawing creation.
    • Managed extensive documentation, including 1800 transmittals and 250 RFIs, using Newforma software for efficient project communication. (Pinnacle Infotech)

  • Project Duration: The MRO and cargo facilities were part of the broader Muscat International Airport expansion, with significant milestones achieved between 2007 and 2016.
